sugarbush employees POW day

Connecting with Some Great Organizations

Win’s Word

Protect Our Winters

Last week I had the privilege of being involved with three great organizations that Sugarbush and I are proud to support. I joined Protect Our Winters (POW) at their annual sojourn to Washington DC to speak with legislators about the impact of climate change on winter sports and the need to support legislation that will help to mitigate it and save our winters. POW was founded by professional snowboarder Jeremy Jones, and the group now includes numerous Olympic and pro athletes across many disciplines. I was really impressed with their professionalism and passion. Sugarbush became a Summit Level sponsor this year, the first eastern ski resort to do so. Today representatives from most every department at Sugarbush stood in solidarity with youth around the world who are participating in the Climate Strike.

The Nature Conservancy of Vermont

Later last week, I joined a meeting of The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Vermont chapter to discuss how TNC can do its share in battling climate change. There are many nature-based solutions that can be brought to bear, from preserving healthy forests to improving soil quality so that it can absorb carbon rather than emit it.

Community Events

Then over the weekend I joined three others from our Sugarbush community in our annual golf tournament to support the Vermont National Guard Charitable Foundation. This was particularly relevant as the Guard just learned that they will be part of another deployment into harm’s way next year. It was great to see such a nice turnout for this event, now in its sixteenth year, that was the inspiration of Shawn Sullivan in support of Guard families.

As I played golf last weekend I marveled at the autumn colors that are appearing around the Valley. There are already some bright reds and oranges. Is foliage coming early this year and will it be brilliant? One never knows, but to me it seems to be a bit early and the colors are looking like it might indeed be an impressive foliage season. But Mother Nature does her own thing, so we will just have to see. I am hoping that the colors last another four weeks so that those of you who are coming to Sugarbush for Community Weekend will be able to enjoy them.

This weekend we and other businesses in the Valley are hosting hundreds of Norwich University alumni who will be here to celebrate their 200th anniversary. Located just across our eastern mountains in Northfield, Norwich has been a longtime friend of Sugarbush. We have been honored to host their annual reunion dinners for many years and to have many students both as employees and as skiers and riders over the years. And, of course, we greatly appreciate the military service and sacrifice of so many Norwich graduates.

Sugarbush staff are wrapping up our capital projects around the resort and gearing up for recruiting and orientation season. We will be welcoming around 130 international students in December who will be working in lifts, food and beverage, housekeeping, daycare, tickets, parking, and a few other areas. We are also fortunate that nearly twenty work-and-travel students from last season will be returning. However, we are still in need of help for the winter and have jobs posted for snowmakers, lift operators, ski and ride instructors, food and beverage workers, and housekeepers. So if you know of anyone interested in joining our team, please send them our way. As a bonus, we have additional employee housing available this winter.

All the best,

Win
