Whether you’re chasing loamy lines down Plum Line or cruising the flowy loops at Blueberry Lake, one thing’s for sure: showing up unprepared is the fastest way to turn type-1 fun into a full-blown scramble. The Mad River Valley’s got a little bit of everything, which means your pack should too.
1. Water, Water, Water (Did We Mention Water?)
The Valley’s climbs are no joke. Between switchbacks, punchy tech, and “Vermont flat” terrain (read: not flat), staying hydrated isn’t optional, it’s essential. Pack a full water bottle or a hydration pack, and if you’re going big, toss in some electrolytes too. Pro Tip: that post-ride maple creemee tastes even better when you’re not dehydrated.
2. Snacks That Survive a Jersey Pocket
Nobody wants to bonk halfway through Evolution. Bring snacks that won’t melt, explode, or turn into mush. Think trail mix, bars, or a handful of salty pretzels.
3. Layers You Can Peel Like an Onion
Weather in the Valley can shift faster than your new derailleur. Start with a moisture-wicking base and toss in a light windbreaker or packable rain shell. You’ll thank us when a cloud rolls in halfway up.
4. Tools So You Can Be Your Own Hero
A multitool, spare tube, tire levers, and a mini pump or CO₂ cartridge are non-negotiable. Even if you just had your bike tuned, you never know what a root can do. Be the rider everyone wants to follow… the one who can fix a flat without a YouTube tutorial.
5. Trail Map or App (aka your breadcrumbs)
There’s a lot of trails out there, and not all of it is marked like a ski run. The Trailforks App is your best friend. No shame in pulling out your phone mid-ride to figure out where “Goodnight Irene” just spit you out. Bonus tip: Before you even roll out, check trail conditions. Mad River Riders post updates regularly, and after a good rain, trails may be closed to preserve all that sweet singletrack. It’s a quick step that saves a soggy drive and a whole lot of trail karma.
6. Good Vibes & A Willing Attitude
No matter your skill level, the Valley’s trails reward a little grit and a lot of humor. You’re gonna get muddy. You might hike-a-bike. You will absolutely have a hoot on the way down. Bring your stoke and maybe a friend who knows how to fix a dropped chain.
Missing a Few Essentials? No Biggie.
Whether your derailleur is acting up or you just realized you left your helmet in your trunk (we’ve been there), Stark Mountain Bike Works in Waitsfield and Madbush Falls near Sugarbush have your back. Rentals, repairs, spare tubes, shiny new gloves, they’re the local go-to spots to get you rolling.
See you out there, trail warrior. And don’t forget your snacks.
