A Clear Night, a Groomer’s Glow: Behind the Lens at Sugarbush

When you spend most of the winter chasing light in a place like Sugarbush, patience becomes part of the job. For weeks, January served up nothing but snow-heavy skies and low visibility. Beautiful for skiing and riding, but not exactly ideal for stargazing or long exposures.

Then came January 22.

The skies finally cleared, and I knew it was time to try a shot. I headed up to the top of Heaven’s Gate at the quiet overlook near Paradise with my GoPro HERO13 Black tucked safely in my pack. The goal? To see if I could catch a glimpse of what goes on after dark. I set up my shot, scheduled it using the star trails feature and headed back down, eager to collect it in the morning.

This image became Sugarbush’s entry into Ikon Pass’s Snow’s Best Bracket photo competition. It’s more than just a pretty picture—it’s a tribute to the quiet work that keeps the mountain running, the beauty that reveals itself when the storm finally breaks, and the reward of being in the right place at the right time… with a little patience and a GoPro.

Voting opened August 11 and runs through August 19. The winning image will be crowned Snow’s Best Shot on August 20 – with the photographer earning a cash prize, a 25/26 Ikon Pass, and full-frame fame.
