Summer to us means sightseeing in our own backyard. The Mad River Valley is where the magic happens this time of year. The rushing of the Mad River, the lilacs blooming across town, everybody emerging from their homes to enjoy the much-welcomed sunshine. The atmosphere of Waitsfield and Warren really shift when spring and summer arrive. If you haven’t been able to visit us in the warmer months, consider this your sign. We’re known for winter here, but once you feel the buzzing of activity and joyful outdoor pleasures, you’ll want to make our valley your new year-round destination spot.
Bridge Street is the hub of it all. Historic Waitsfield Village is the home of our famous covered bridge (Vermont’s oldest active covered bridge), lots of shopping, dining, swimming, and more! The town of Waitsfield was chartered in 1782. Extending along Vermont Route 100 on either side of Bridge Street, it is a well-preserved example of a 19th-century village, with only a few sympathetic 20th-century additions. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. From outdoor activities, to relaxing by the river, and doing a little shopping, let’s explore everything to do on Bridge Street in Waitsfield.
Shopping

Small businesses are the heart of Bridge Street. You’ll find everything from local goods, handmade items, trendy clothing, home goods and more! The newest member of the shopping community is Deadrise Revival. A locally owned antique store featuring finds from across New England. They find gems of picture frames, furniture, glassware, art, decor, and so much more. Around the corner you’ll find Someday Boutique. A clothing store with a mix of edgy, preppy, modern boho, and classically timeless pieces for women. The Artisan’s Gallery is staple of the area. Owned and operated by four partners working with 150+ Vermont artists in Historic Waitsfield, they sell a handpicked selection of eclectic, lively, personalized quality pieces. Whether you’re shopping for a new piece for your home, or just enjoying the craft, it’s a must see! Other shops you’ll find in the hub include Three Buds Apothecary, The Silver Trout Fly Fishing Shop, and Mad River Candles. Each shop is curated with unique finds you won’t see anywhere else in the Valley. So on your next visit, if you’re looking to do some shopping – you know where to go!
Dining

If you’re looking for a bite while meandering by the river, you’ve got a few options down at Bridge Street! For a pick me up, you can grab a coffee with your food, at Twisted Halo. Known for their donuts and their delicious coffee, it’s a must do. From iced drinks, to espresso beverages, sandwiches, salads, sweets and more, it’s the perfect lunch spot. Serving up all the good stuff daily, it’s a treat to grab a bite and head to the tables and dine with a view of the river. Also in that same corner of Bridge Street is Scrag and Roe. One of the most unique restaurants in the Valley. They serve a variety of rotating dishes inspired by their journeys—perfect for sharing with friends, family, and enjoying on the go. The menu focuses on Asian dishes from China, the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam for authentic flavors you can’t find anywhere else in the Mad River Valley!
Outdoor Activities

One of the most well-known sections of the Mad River flows right alongside Bridge Street. Under the Great Eddy Covered Bridge, the river gives lots of opportunities for fun and adventure. Along the river you’ll find tons of grassy space to sprawl out, bring a picnic, some chairs, and relax. A little bit further down the river, you’ll find a path that leads you to a rocky beach where you can enjoy warm summer days. In the area, you can fly fish and paddle when the water permits. You can also float down the river in tubes, jump off the rocks, or just wade in the clear water. It’s the perfect spot for a summer afternoon with family and friends!
