When people think about the best time to ski in Vermont, midwinter usually gets all the credit. January, February, during those holiday breaks, sure, we definitely see some decent snow during that period (this season is no different). But, ask a local and an answer you may hear more often than not, is March is the best skiing in Vermont. March is typically when we round a corner in the season. We’re usually at our deepest snowpack of the season, the days are getting longer, and snow storms are still very likely. The mix of winter snow and spring weather makes for some of the most enjoyable skiing of the year.
Don’t let our recent warm up fool you. March is when spring skiing in Vermont hits its stride. No more bitter cold, soft turns all day long, and fun in the sun on and off the mountain. There are a lot of reasons why this stretch of the season is a favorite of many, lets get into why.

Snow Totals

March is historically one of the snowiest months here in Vermont! Big spring storms are still common. Some of Vermont’s biggest storms on record have occurred during March. But even if we look at Sugarbush more specifically, March often matches or even exceeds February’s snow totals. Here they are from the last few years:
24-25: 26″
23-24: 62″
22-23: 62″
21-22: 40″
It’s Deeeep Out There

Let’s talk this season’s snowpack. Cause boy do we have some. With the help of mother nature, our snowmaking team works hard through the first half of the season to create luscious snow to ski, but also snowpack to help us out right about this time of year. With all of the storms the past few weeks, we likely have hit our peak snowpack for the season as spring rolls in. Even with storms still likely, the spring sun and warm weather create those freeze/thaw cycles softening up snow in the afternoon. All this to say, we still got snow and it’s not going anywhere any time soon.
More Sunshine

Ah Daylight Savings. A love hate relationship we all have until we realize the first sunset afterwards is 6:45PM?! After a dark winter, we love to see it. With longer days, comes more sunshine. Winter is ending and we’re coming up to the Spring Equinox which generally means, more sun. So here, we can talk about shedding layers, killer (and longer) après vibes, plus easier travel. A powdery snow storm in March equals great conditions on the hill with fast melting snow on pavement, which means there’s no excuse for missing out!
CORN!

It’s got the juice! (iykyk). Spring skiing means cooooorrrn. These freeze/thaw cycles create the phenomenon commonly known as corn snow. A tried and true favorite for lots of skiers and riders. We’re talking smooth groomers, soft bumps, and cushy turns as the days warm up. We really love corn here at Sugarbush. In case you missed it last season, we made a video all about it. (Please, go watch it. You will not be disappointed.)
Primo Après Vibes

Spring is officially, deck, courtyard, and event season here at Sugarbush. The days are longer which means even more après to be had after an already full day of skiing and riding. Cold drinks actually hit when you’re left warmed by the sun in your base layers. Plus, we’d be remiss not to mention some of our all time favorite spring events. We’re talking Pond Skim, Pride Weekend, Spring Fling, Mt. Ellen Closing Champagne Cowbell Party, and more.
