This season has been nothing short of legendary—16 feet of snow and counting, with more in the forecast! The powder days have been unforgettable, the turns deep, and the stoke high. But with all this incredible snowfall comes an important conversation about safety, especially when it comes to tree wells and skiing in the woods.
What is a Tree Well?
A tree well is the void or area of loose, unconsolidated snow that forms around the base of a tree. These wells can be dangerously deep, especially after a big storm cycle. The branches of the tree prevent snow from compacting, creating a hidden hazard for skiers and riders. If someone falls in, they can become trapped and struggle to breathe—a situation known as Snow Immersion Suffocation (SIS).
How to Stay Safe
1. Ride with a Partner
The single most effective way to stay safe in deep snow is to ski or ride with a buddy—and keep them in sight at all times. Not just down the mountain, but within immediate reach.
2. Give Trees Some Space
Tree skiing is one of the best parts of powder days, but be aware of your surroundings. Avoid riding too close to the base of trees, where wells are most dangerous.
3. Carry Safety Gear
A whistle, a beacon, and a probe aren’t just for the backcountry—they can be useful even within resort boundaries on deep days. If you or your partner get caught, every second counts.
4. If You Fall, Fight to Stay Upright
If you feel yourself tipping into a tree well, try to grab branches or the tree trunk to stop your descent. If you do fall in, create space around your face and yell for help.
5. Know the Signs of Deep Snow Danger
On stormy days, or when the snowpack is especially deep, tree wells are more hazardous. Be extra vigilant when skiing in gladed areas or after a major snowfall.

What to Do If Someone Falls in a Tree Well
If your partner disappears into a tree well, act immediately:
- Call for help—get ski patrol involved as soon as possible. Remember to put Emergency Dispatch in your phone: 802-583-6567!
- Move fast—get to your partner quickly and start digging them out, focusing on clearing their airway first.
- Stay calm—this can be a life-threatening situation, but quick action makes all the difference.
